• Jharkhand Gets GI Tags for 11 Traditional Products-Jharkhand’s rich cultural heritage has received a major boost with 11 traditional products from the state being granted Geographical Indication, or GI, tags.
• The newly recognised products include Bhoya Saree and Fabric, Kuchai Silk Saree, Kesaria Kalakand, Dokra Craft, Tumka Chadar, Baroni Paintings, Munda Jewellery, Jharkhand Bamboo Craft, Tussar Silk and Sarees, Jadopatia Painting, and Pancho Saree and Fabric.
• Pahili Raja festival begins in Odisha, marking onset of monsoon and Ashadha month.In Odisha, the three-day Raja festival began today with the celebration of Pahili Raja, ushering in the onset of the monsoon and the Odia month of Ashadha. The festival symbolises reverence for Mother Earth and reflects the state's rich agrarian traditions.

International

• Israel Attacks Hezbollah Targets in Beirut-The Israeli military today announced that it launched strike on Lebanese capital targeting infrastructure of Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah.
• US President Donald Trump has said a deal aimed at ending the conflict with Iran is scheduled to be signed today, adding that the strategic Strait of Hormuz would be open to all immediately afterwards.
• Switzerland is set to vote in a referendum today on limiting its population size. Swiss voters will decide whether to cap the country's population at 10 million. If the proposal passes, Switzerland would become the first European country to set a limit on its population.
• Iranian authorities have announced the schedule for the farewell, procession and burial ceremonies of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to Iran's News Agency, farewell ceremonies for the late Khamenei will be held on July 4 and 5 at the Imam Khomeini Prayer Grounds in Tehran.
• SIPRI Report 2026-The SIPRI Yearbook 2026, released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), highlights a global pivot toward nuclear modernization and an increased operational deployment of nuclear weapons. States are increasingly relying on nuclear weapons amid heightened escalation risks, reversing decades of reduction efforts.
• Total Warheads: The world’s nine nuclear-armed states (the US, Russia, UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Israel) possess an estimated 12,121 nuclear warheads. 
• Deployed Warheads: Approximately 3,904 of these warheads are operationally deployed with missiles or aircraft, an increase from previous years.
• India modestly expanded its nuclear stockpile to an estimated 190 warheads by early 2026, slightly surpassing Pakistan’s estimated 170 warheads.

• The Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, has been designated as India’s 100th Ramsar site. - This wetland is rich in avifaunal biodiversity, attracting several migratory and resident birds. 
• A Ramsar site is a wetland of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention. Established in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, this global environmental treaty focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands to protect vital biodiversity and provide critical habitats for migratory waterfowl.
• The 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' (Plant a Tree in Mother's Name) campaign is a major nationwide environmental initiative launched by the Government of India on World Environment Day (June 5, 2024).The campaign encourages citizens to plant a sapling as a tribute to their mothers, beautifully linking love for one's mother with a responsibility toward Mother Earth.
• E85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles launched to lower dependency on imported crude oil:On the occasion of World Environment Day, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today launched E85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles in New Delhi.
• E85 is a high-ethanol fuel blend consisting of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. Recently rolled out in India, it offers significantly lower emissions and a cheaper pump price. However, it is highly corrosive and delivers less energy per unit, requiring specially designed vehicles to run properly.

Economy and banking

• Country’s GDP growth rate estimated at 7.7% in 2025-26:India’s economy has maintained strong momentum in 2025-26 with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimated to grow by 7.7 per cent as compared to 7.1 per cent in 2024-25. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation today released the Provisional Estimates of Annual GDP for the Financial Year 2025-26 and quarterly estimates of January to March this year. The real GDP is estimated to attain a level of over 323 lakh crore rupees in 2025-26, against the first revised estimate of GDP for 2024-25 of over 299 lakh crore rupees.
• RBI keeps repo rate unchanged at 5.25%, Reduces GDP growth projection to 6.6%-The Reserve Bank of India kept interest rates unchanged for the second time in a row in the current financial year. Announcing the second bi-monthly monetary policy for the current fiscal, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra today said that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has unanimously decided to retain the short-term lending rate or the repo rate, at 5.25% with a neutral stance.RBI has lowers GDP growth projection to 6.6% from 6.9% earlier for current fiscal. Governor also increased CPI inflation target to 5.1 percent from 4.6% for current financial year. RBI has also raised limit for investments by Non-Resident Indians, Overseas Citizens of India in equity instruments.

• Approval given to University of Liverpool, UK, to establish campus in Bengaluru-In a significant step toward internationalisation of higher education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Ministry of Education today handed over the Letter of Approval (LoA) to the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, to establish its branch campus in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The letter was handed over in the presence of the External Affairs Minister and the UK Foreign Secretary.
• The inaugural edition of the World Yogasana Sports Championship is being held at the Eka Arena in Ahmedabad(June 4 – 8, 2026).This historic edition is supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Ministry of Ayush, and the Sports Authority of India. • India’s first flex-fuel passenger vehicle marks new chapter in country’s energy transition:Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and Union Minister for Road, Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari today launched India’s first flex-fuel passenger vehicle by Maruti Suzuki in New Delhi. Flex-fuel vehicles can operate on a range of ethanol-petrol blends, from E20 up to E100.

• NASA declares Mars orbiter Maven mission over after six months of silence-NASA’s Maven spacecraft around Mars has been declared dead. After six months of radio silence. The space agency confirmed that the mission had ended after more than a decade of observations. Launched in 2013 to study the red planet’s atmosphere from orbit, Maven mysteriously fell silent in early December after passing behind Mars.
• UN Security Council-Five countries, including Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe, have been elected non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for a two-year term. They will assume their seats on January 1, 2027, and serve until December 31, 2028. The newly elected members will replace the outgoing non-permanent members – Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia.
• The permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (often called the "P5") are China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
• These five nations are the only members with the power to veto any substantive resolution, meaning that a single negative vote from any of them can block a Council decision. Along with 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms, the P5 share primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.
• World Health Organization has warned that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo remains ahead of efforts to contain it. Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the virus had gained a big head-start and that health authorities were still catching up.

• Married Daughter Cannot Be Excluded From Compassionate Appointment : SC-The Supreme Court today held that married daughters cannot be excluded from compassionate appointment. The apex court said the omission of married daughters from the definition of family is manifestly arbitrary, unjustified and constitutionally untenable

• Govt to replace WPI with PPI system to align country’s data woth global best practices-The government has decided to gradually phase out the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) and replace it with a comprehensive Producer Price Index (PPI) system. The decision was taken to modernise country’s inflation and pricing data framework and align it with global best practices.
• The Commerce and Industry Ministry said that the government has approved the revision of the base year of the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) from 2011-12 to 2022-23. Considering the wide usage of WPI in price escalation clauses, this index will be released for five years from the date of release of the revised series along with PPI and will be discontinued thereafter.The revised Wholesale Price Index and New Producer Price Indices is scheduled to be released on 15th Jun.

PM SVANidhi scheme

The PM SVANidhi (Prime Minister Street Vendor's AtmaNirbhar Nidhi) scheme is a central micro-credit initiative launched in June 2020 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) to provide collateral-free working capital loans to street vendors. Originally introduced to help vendors recover from pandemic-induced financial disruptions, the scheme has been restructured and extended until March 31, 2030.

Restructured Loan and Tranche Framework 

The scheme operates on a graduated ladder structure, allowing street vendors to access higher credit amounts upon the timely repayment of earlier tranches:

• 1st Tranche: Working capital loan up to ₹15,000 with a repayment tenure of 12 months.
• 2nd Tranche: Enhanced loan up to ₹25,000 with a repayment tenure of 18 months.
• 3rd Tranche: Term loan up to ₹50,000 with a repayment tenure of 36 months.

Eligibility Criteria

The scheme is applicable pan-India across all States and Union Territories that have notified rules under the Street Vendors Act of 2014. It covers urban local bodies (ULBs), census towns, and peri-urban areas: 

• Urban Vendors: Must possess a valid Certificate of Vending (CoV), Identity Card, or Letter of Recommendation (LoR) from local Town Vending Committees.
• Peri-Urban / Census Town Vendors: Eligible if they possess an LoR approved by their respective Block Development Officer (BDO). 
• Basic Requirements: The applicant must be at least 18 years old. No minimum credit score or project proposals are required for approval.

A state-of-the-art, integrated atmospheric remote-sensing system that provides real-time data on fog, turbulence, aerosols, wind speed, and moisture. It offers highly accurate, automated "nowcasting" (real-time weather tracking updated every 5 minutes) and hazard alerts for pilots and air traffic controllers.
• Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia releases postage stamp marking 200 years of Hindi journalism:To mark the completion of 200 years of Hindi journalism, Communication Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia today released a commemorative postage stamp and first-day cover in honour of the first Hindi Newspaper Udant Martand, in New Delhi.

• The National Steering Committee (NSC) has approved the Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) for the Visakhapatnam ITI Cluster in Andhra Pradesh under the PM-SETU scheme, submitted by a private company named Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India.The approval marks the first-ever SIP to be cleared under the Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs (PM-SETU) scheme. • US, Britain and Australia Announce Partnership to Develop Advanced Underwater Drone Technology-Defence ministers from the United States, Britain and Australia announced today a joint partnership to develop and deploy advanced underwater drone technology aimed at protecting undersea cables, strengthening maritime security and boosting military capabilities under the Aukus security pact.
• India’s Haj Mission Wins Two Prestigious Labbaytum Awards in Saudi Arabia-India’s Haj Mission won two prestigious awards at this year’s Khitamahu Misk ceremony in Saudi Arabia, marking a historic first for the country. USA for a framework to establish an Advanced Packaging Glass Core Substrate Manufacturing Facility in Odisha. The project represents one of the largest high-technology manufacturing investments in the country. The facility is proposed to be located in the Bhubaneswar-Khurda region.
• SARTHAK-PDS-Cabinet approves Integration and Continuation of two schemes viz. (i) “Assistance to State Agencies for intra-State movement of foodgrains and FPS dealers’ margin under NFSA” and (ii) “Scheme for Modernization and Reforms through Technology in Public Distribution System (SMART PDS)” under umbrella scheme SARTHAK-PDS.The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the continuation of the “Scheme for Assistance in Ration Transport and Handling-Income with Automation in PDS” (SARTHAK PDS) as an umbrella scheme, in the 16th Finance Commission cycle award period, with an outlay of Rs. 25,530 crore as Central share.
• Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has urged states to prepare for a potentially below-normal monsoon amid El Niño concerns-He referenced the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) projection that southwest monsoon rainfall is likely to be around 90% of the long-period average.

• The Online Common Entrance Examination for enrolment into the Indian Army under the Agnipath Scheme and Regular Cadre for the recruitment year 2027 will be conducted from June first to June twelfth, 2026.The Agnipath Scheme is a short-term, contractual recruitment policy for the Indian Armed Forces (Army, Navy, and Air Force). • In Jammu and Kashmir, the rescue operation in Gulmarg to rescue around 300 stranded tourists concluded and all the people have been evacuated safely.The Indian Army and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) led the operation at the Gulmarg Gondola following a technical malfunction in the gondola cable car system. The fault caused a sudden suspension of services between the base station and Phase-I, leaving several tourists stranded today.
• Assam government today introduced the Uniform Civil Code Bill in the state assembly. The bill seeks to ban polygamy and make registration of live-in relationships compulsory. The Bill provides that it will not be applicable to any of the Scheduled Tribes residing in Assam. For marriage, the Bill sets 21 years and 18 years as minimum age for men and women respectively, and prohibits polygamy. To safeguard legal rights, the Bill proposes to make marriage and divorce registration compulsory, which will be vital for securing maintenance, inheritance and other legal protection for spouses.
• FM Sitharaman launches initiatives to strengthen MSMEs -Speaking at an event in Mumbai to mark the 37th anniversary of the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), Ms Sitharaman launched a set of strategic portals and initiatives aimed at strengthening the MSME ecosystem, enhancing last-mile credit delivery and accelerating the modernisation of rural industries.

1. The initiatives launched include the SIDBI MachFin Mart, a digital platform to help MSMEs access machinery through a structured marketplace supporting price discovery, standardisation and technology adoption.
2. The finance minister also launched the RRB Co-Lending Portal to operationalise partnerships between SIDBI and Regional Rural Banks for improving credit flow in rural and underserved regions.
3. Another major initiative launched was MoRE, or Modernisation of Rural Enterprises, a programme aimed at providing transformational support to 10 thousand rural micro and artisanal units over the next three years through cluster-based interventions.

• Fastest man in India;On the second day of the 2026 Athletics Federation Cup, Gurindervir Singh clinched the gold medal in the men’s 100m event in Ranchi with a new national record timing of 10.09 seconds. He improved his previous personal best of 10.17 seconds and comfortably surpassed the Commonwealth Games qualification mark of 10.16 seconds.He is a Petty Officer in Indian Navy.
• The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has successfully completed its first-ever all-women international mountaineering expedition to Mount Everest, marking a historic milestone in the Force’s mountaineering achievements. In a statement, the ITBP said the 14-member team, comprising 11 women climbers and three technical and support staff, summited the world’s highest peak on the 21st of this month via the South Col route from the Nepal side. The expedition was flagged off from ITBP headquarters on 19th April.
• As part of its “Clean Himalaya–Save Glacier” campaign, the team also carried out environmental awareness activities and collected non-biodegradable waste from the Everest region.
• As part of nationwide drive to prevent cervical cancer, the HPV Vaccination campaign will start in West Bengal from 30th May this year. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari today announced.The HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccine is a highly effective, safe preventative measure that protects against cancer-causing HPV strains and genital warts.India offers free Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccinations for 14-year-old girls through government health facilities, following the launch of a historic nationwide campaign. • RBI approves record ₹2.86 lakh crore surplus transfer to Central Government for Financial Year 2025-26-The Reserve Bank of India has approved the transfer of a record ₹2.86 lakh crore as surplus to the Central Government for the financial year 2025-26, marking one of the highest dividend payouts by the central bank.In a statement, the RBI said its gross income increased by 26.42 per cent during Financial Year 2025-26 compared to the previous year, while expenditure before risk provisions rose by 27.60 per cent. According to the central bank, net income before risk provisions and transfer to statutory funds stood at ₹3.95 lakh crore in FY26, up from ₹3.13 lakh crore in FY25. The RBI’s balance sheet also expanded by 20.61 per cent to ₹91.97 lakh crore as of March 31 this year.

• Short Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-1’ was successfully test-launched from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha today. Ministry of Defence said that the launch validated all operational and technical parameters. The test was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command.
• Khet Bachao Abhiyan-Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has said that Khet Bachao Abhiyan, focusing on soil health, balanced fertiliser use, and sustainable agriculture, has reached 2 crore 71 lakh Citizens. The Khet Bachao Abhiyan campaign has established a robust outreach across the country through multiple platforms to educate farmers and stakeholders on scientific nutrient management.This aims to encourage soil test-based nutrient management and reduce overdependence on chemical fertilisers, thereby protecting soil fertility and ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability.

• Indian Army launches ‘Q-FORCE’ application for logistics and sustainment management-The Q-FORCE application is an integrated digital platform launched by the Indian Army designed to modernize and streamline its logistics, supply chain, and transport operations.

• A mobile application JEEVAN (Joint Elderly Empowerment and Virtual Assistance Network) has been launched today to strengthen support systems for senior citizens across the country. Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dr Virendra Kumar launched this application in New Delhi.
• The mobile application JEEVAN provides a range of features aimed at addressing the needs and concerns of senior citizens, including information on Government schemes and welfare programmes, emergency assistance and details of senior citizen homes. The platform has been designed with a user-friendly interface, simplified navigation and accessibility features, keeping in view the requirements of elderly users.
• The Minister also launched Senior Holistic Care Assistance and Training for Your Utility (SHATAYU) Dashboard to support and strengthen caregiving services for senior citizens.International

• The Israeli government has released and deported hundreds of flotilla activists who attempted to breach Israel's naval blockade of Gaza.-The flotilla to Gaza consists of hundreds of international human rights activists, medics, journalists, and politicians, including high-profile figures such as climate campaigner Greta Thunberg and French MEP Rima Hassan. Organized by coalitions like the Freedom Flotilla, participants represent dozens of countries across six continents, including Australia, Brazil, Ireland, and Italy.
• India’s Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission has been honoured with the 2026 Goddard Astronautics Award by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). India’s Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Vinay Kwatra, accepted the award on behalf of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) at the AIAA ASCEND 2026 Conference.
• The first International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit, which was scheduled to take place in New Delhi on June 1, has been postponed to a later date. The Summit focusses on the conservation of seven Big Cat species which are Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma and their ecosystems.

• He is globally renowned for his relentless campaigns to eradicate social evils, most notably playing a pivotal role in the abolition of the practice of Sati.

• The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a flagship initiative by the Government of India aimed at providing up to 300 units of free electricity per month to 1 crore households across the country. With a total budget layout of over ₹75,000 crores, the scheme encourages the installation of rooftop solar panels to eliminate electricity expenses for poor and middle-class families.The central government provides direct financial assistance (CFA) covering 40% to 60% of the total solar system installation cost. • The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is an initiative by the Indian Government, implemented by the National Health Authority, to build a digitally empowered, interoperable healthcare ecosystem. It has surpassed 90 crore (900 million) Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHAs), allowing citizens to securely link and share their medical records.Citizens can easily create their unique ABHA number and manage their health records through the NHA Official ABDM Portal or via designated Personal Health Record (PHR) applications.
