National

  • The Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, has been designated as India’s 100th Ramsar site. - This wetland is rich in avifaunal biodiversity, attracting several migratory and resident birds. 
    • A Ramsar site is a wetland of international importance designated under the Ramsar Convention. Established in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, this global environmental treaty focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands to protect vital biodiversity and provide critical habitats for migratory waterfowl.
  • The 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' (Plant a Tree in Mother's Name) campaign is a major nationwide environmental initiative launched by the Government of India on World Environment Day (June 5, 2024).The campaign encourages citizens to plant a sapling as a tribute to their mothers, beautifully linking love for one's mother with a responsibility toward Mother Earth.
  • E85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles launched to lower dependency on imported crude oil:On the occasion of World Environment Day, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today launched E85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles in New Delhi.
    • E85 is a high-ethanol fuel blend consisting of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. Recently rolled out in India, it offers significantly lower emissions and a cheaper pump price. However, it is highly corrosive and delivers less energy per unit, requiring specially designed vehicles to run properly.

Economy and banking

  • Country’s GDP growth rate estimated at 7.7% in 2025-26:India’s economy has maintained strong momentum in 2025-26 with real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) estimated to grow by 7.7 per cent as compared to 7.1 per cent in 2024-25. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation today released the Provisional Estimates of Annual GDP for the Financial Year 2025-26 and quarterly estimates of January to March this year. The real GDP is estimated to attain a level of over 323 lakh crore rupees in 2025-26, against the first revised estimate of GDP for 2024-25 of over 299 lakh crore rupees.
  • RBI keeps repo rate unchanged at 5.25%, Reduces GDP growth projection to 6.6%-The Reserve Bank of India kept interest rates unchanged for the second time in a row in the current financial year. Announcing the second bi-monthly monetary policy for the current fiscal, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra today said that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has unanimously decided to retain the short-term lending rate or the repo rate, at 5.25% with a neutral stance.RBI has lowers GDP growth projection to 6.6% from 6.9% earlier for current fiscal. Governor also increased CPI inflation target to 5.1 percent from 4.6% for current financial year. RBI has also raised limit for investments by Non-Resident Indians, Overseas Citizens of India in equity instruments.

  • Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai sworn in as Chief Justice of Patna High Court:Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai took the oath of office as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court today. Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain administered the oath of office and secrecy to her at a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Patna.

  • U-18 Asia Cup Hockey: India enter final beating Pakistan 5-3 in Semi Final:In Hockey, India defeated Pakistan 5-3 in the Semifinal of the Men’s Under-18 Asia Cup in Kakamigahara, Japan to set up a title clash against the hosts.
  • Praggnanandhaa defeats Gukesh, keeps title hopes alive at Norway Chess 2026-India’s Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu remained in contention for the Norway Chess 2026 title after defeating world champion Gukesh Dommaraju in Round Nine.In the women’s section, Bibisara Assaubayeva secured the Norway Chess Women 2026 title with a round to spare. She leads the standings with 16.5 points. The victory took Praggnanandhaa to 15 points, just half a point behind leader Wesley, who has 15.5 points after beating Magnus Carlsen in the Armageddon tiebreak following a drawn classical game.In the women’s section, Bibisara Assaubayeva secured the Norway Chess Women 2026 title with a round to spare. She leads the standings with 16.5 points. Zhu Jiner moved to second place with 13 points after defeating India’s Divya Deshmukh,
