International

  • UN votes to adopt new world map reflecting accurate size of Africa:The UN General Assembly has voted to replace the traditional world map with one that more accurately reflects the size of Africa. The “Correct the Map” resolution, sponsored by Togo and backed by African Union (AU) members, passed .
    • The Mercator map, which has been in common use since the 16th Century, has come under criticism as it shows Africa as similar in size to Greenland, even though it is 14 times larger. Critics say this leads to the development needs and potential for countries near the equator to be minimised.
    • The Mercator map was designed in 1569 by the Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator to help European explorers navigate across the world. The map makes countries near the poles appear much larger than they really are. The distortion of his map is a result of the fact that it is impossible to accurately represent the surface of a globe on a two-dimensional chart.
    • In an effort to correct this, a team of cartographers in 2018 created an equal area map they called the Equal Earth projection, which shows the relative sizes of continents more accurately.
    • The Mercator map shows bigger sizes for countries near the poles because it stretches the grid lines wider and wider as they move away from the equator to turn a round globe into a flat rectangle.Flattening a sphere: The Earth is a 3D ball, but paper or computer screens are 2D flat surfaces. You cannot flatten a round orange peel without tearing or stretching it.

  • Coal and lignite gasification is a thermo-chemical process that converts solid coal or brown/soft lignite into a combustible gas mixture called syngas (synthesis gas) rather than burning it directly. Inside a pressurized vessel called a gasifier, solid coal or lignite is subjected to high temperatures (typically above 1,000°C) and high pressure with a limited, controlled supply of oxygen and steam. Instead of burning into ash, the carbon bonds in the coal react chemically with steam and oxygen to produce a mixture composed primarily of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen (H₂), along with smaller amounts of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂).
