• ISRO successfully launches EOS-05 Earth Observation Satellite:The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched EOS-05 aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

• Significance: The mission strengthens India's capability for high-quality, near-real-time Earth observation from a geosynchronous orbit.
• First Geo-Imaging Satellite: It is India's first imaging satellite operating from a geosynchronous orbit, allowing it to match Earth's rotation speed and maintain continuous, 24/7 watch over the Indian landmass
• EOS = Earth Observation Satellite;

• Botanical Survey of India (BSI) scientists discovered a new flowering plant species, Osbeckia ulotricha, in the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve located in the southern Western Ghats.
• Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve: Established in 2001, spanning Kerala and Tamil Nadu; included in UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) in 2016.

• India–Belgium Strategic MoUs Signed: India and Belgium concluded bilateral negotiations signing major Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) focused on defence technology sharing and clean energy transitions.Significance: Enhances bilateral trade, deepens port logistics cooperation, and facilitates clean hydrogen supply chains.

• Quad Sherpas’ Meeting held in New Delhi:Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri hosted a Quad Sherpas’ Meeting in New Delhi yesterday. The Ministry of External Affairs said the discussions covered key areas of Quad cooperation, including maritime and transnational security, economic prosperity and security, critical and emerging technologies, and humanitarian assistance and emergency response.The Quad most commonly refers to the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, an informal strategic forum between Australia, India, Japan, and the United States.

Economy and banking

• India’s Current Account Deficit (CAD) at $4.2 Billion in Q1 FY27:The News: RBI released balance of payments data showing India's CAD widened to $4.2 billion (0.5% of GDP) in Q1 FY2026–27 (April–June 2026), compared to $3.4 billion (0.4% of GDP) in Q1 FY2025–26.
• Key Drivers: An increase in the merchandise trade deficit amid geopolitical supply disruptions, partially offset by robust services exports and healthy inward remittances (reaching $42.9 billion).
• Current Account Components: Trade in Goods (merchandise), Trade in Services (invisibles), Net Factor Income from Abroad, and Net Unilateral Transfers (remittances/grants).

• RBI Permits Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs) to Invest in IDPIC: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) amended the investment norms for Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs), permitting them to acquire equity shares in the Indian Digital Payment Intelligence Corporation (IDPIC).
• Objective: IDPIC serves as a central non-profit digital intelligence hub designed to detect, monitor, and curb fraud across digital payment networks in real-time. Membership empowers cooperative banks to strengthen systemic cybersecurity and anti-fraud protocols.
• RBI Established: April 1, 1935 (under the RBI Act, 1934)

Appointments

• Syed Akbaruddin, former Indian diplomat and former Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, was appointed as a part-time, non-official director on the RBI Central Board for four years.

• The 5th Sohra International Half Marathon 2026 was successfully held today, bringing together regional, national, and international athletes to Meghalaya. The event was organised by the Meghalaya State Olympics Association (MSOA) in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs,
