Khet Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Field Campaign) is a significant agricultural initiative in India focused on restoring soil health, promoting sustainable farming practices, and ensuring long-term food security. Here is a comprehensive breakdown of the campaign, its objectives, and its core strategies-
Core Objectives
- Restoring Soil Health: Addressing the critical issue of soil degradation caused by excessive chemical use, erosion, and unsustainable farming practices.
- Balanced Fertilizer Usage: Educating farmers to move away from the overused, highly subsidized urea and adopt a balanced ratio of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K).
- Promoting Sustainable Agriculture: Encouraging natural farming, organic farming, and micro-irrigation to conserve water and ecology.
- Reducing Cost of Cultivation: By optimizing input use based on scientific data, the campaign aims to cut down unnecessary expenses for farmers, thereby boosting net income.
Key Strategies & Implementations
- Soil Health Card Integration: The initiative relies heavily on scientific soil testing. Farmers are provided with detailed reports on the nutrient status of their soil, along with customized dosage recommendations for 12 essential nutrients.
- Promotion of Bio-Fertilizers & Nano Urea: To reduce the environmental footprint, the campaign promotes the adoption of liquid nano urea and bio-fertilizers, which have higher efficiency and cause less soil toxicity.
- Capacity Building & Awareness: Organizing village-level camps, demonstrations, and training programs to bridge the gap between agricultural scientists and grassroots farmers.
- Diversification of Crops: Encouraging farmers to rotate traditional water-guzzling crops with pulses, oilseeds, and millets to naturally replenish soil nitrogen and improve biodiversity.
