• Maharashtra became the first Indian state to provide formal legal recognition to women farmers through the Maharashtra Women Farmers Empowerment Act, 2026.The legislation seeks to ensure that women engaged in farming can access government schemes, agricultural services and institutional support even when they do not own land in their names.
• Two agricultural products from Unjha in Gujarat's Mehsana district received Geographical Indication (GI) tags:
• Unjha Cumin (Jeera)
• Unjha Fennel (Saunf)

The recognition highlights their distinctive regional identity and agricultural characteristics.

• Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Data Breach Raises Cybersecurity Concerns:A cybersecurity incident involving documents related to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) in Tamil Nadu came to light.Reports indicated that thousands of files associated with a contractor's systems had been exposed online. NPCIL clarified that the leaked information related to conventional Balance of Plant (BoP) infrastructure and did not compromise nuclear safety or security systems.

• The Indian Grey Hornbill (Ocyceros birostris) has returned to Gujarat's Gir landscape after being absent from the region for around six decades.The return followed a conservation and reintroduction initiative by the Gujarat Forest Department.
• The annual Jagannath Rath Yatra was held on 16 July 2026.The famous festival is centred on Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra.The principal Rath Yatra takes place in Puri, Odisha, where the three deities are taken from the Jagannath Temple towards the Gundicha Temple.

• Inauguration: Union Minister Pralhad Joshi inaugurated the White Rabbit technology-based Indian Standard Time (IST) dissemination facility at the Regional Reference Standards Laboratory (RRSL) in Bengaluru.
• White Rabbit (WR) is an open-source, Ethernet-based network technology developed at CERN that provides sub-nanosecond synchronization accuracy and picosecond precision for distributed electronic devices.
• Initiative: Developed under the "One Nation, One Time" initiative to establish a uniform, secure, and ultra-precise time standard across India.
• Strategic Sovereignty: Eliminates dependence on foreign time sources (such as GPS), securing India's digital infrastructure against cyber threats, data manipulation, and spoofing.
• Critical Sectors Benefited: Enhances precision and stability for high-frequency financial markets, digital banking, stock exchanges, telecom networks, and national power grids.

• Anti-marine Warfare Malvan set to join Indian Navy-The Indian Navy will commission the second of the Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, Malvan, on the 22nd of this month. The Defence Ministry informed that Malvan, built at Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, epitomises India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision in modern naval shipbuilding and design.
• Operation Southern Readiness 26-2:The Indian Navy will host Operation Southern Readiness 26-2 at the Southern Naval Command, Kochi, from 20th to 23rd of this month. The Defence Ministry said that the four-day multinational training engagement will be conducted in partnership with the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) under the aegis of the Indian Navy-led Combined Task Force 154 (CTF 154), CMF’s dedicated Training Task Force. The training programme will combine classroom instruction, simulator-based training, and practical exposure.

International

• India hosted the 5th Meeting of the BIMSTEC National Security Chiefs in New Delhi on 16 July 2026.The meeting was chaired by India's National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. National security advisers or heads of delegations from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand participated.
