National

  • Somnath Temple marks 75 years of reconstruction with ‘Somnath Amrit Parv’ celebrations-The Somnath Temple, located at Prabhas Patan in Gujarat and widely revered as the foremost of the 12 Jyotirlingas, is marking 75 years since its reconstruction. To commemorate the occasion, the “Somnath Amrit Parv” is being celebrated.
  • Jammu and Kashmir is set to receive 200 electric buses under the PM E Drive Scheme, a major push towards sustainable and eco-friendly public transport in the Union Territory. The buses will be deployed for tourism and pilgrimage activities in the ecologically sensitive and hilly regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • The Ministry of Panchayati Raj announced the winners of the National Panchayat Awards 2025, selecting 42 Panchayats across India for their excellence in local governance and rural development.
    •  Top-Performing States
      • Karnataka: Emerged as the overall leader, securing the highest tally with 6 winning Panchayats. Notably, 5 of these winners hailed from the Udupi district.
      • Andhra Pradesh: Secured the joint-second highest honor with 5 awards.
      • Odisha: Also earned 5 awards, featuring a significant ₹3 crore prize for the Ganjam District
    •  Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar:Awarded to 34 Gram Panchayats demonstrating superior targeted results across 9 distinct LSDG themes: 
      • Poverty-Free & Enhanced Livelihoods: Mudradi Gram Panchayat (Karnataka).
      • Water-Sufficient Panchayat: Madamakki Gram Panchayat (Hebri, Udupi, Karnataka).
      • Healthy Panchayat: Kanchanbari Gram Panchayat (Tripura).
      • Child-Friendly Panchayat: Halanayakanahalli Gram Panchayat (Bengaluru East, Karnataka), followed by Itgaon (Maharashtra).
      • Women-Friendly Governance: Bokkasam Palem Gram Panchayat (Andhra Pradesh)
  •  TVK founder C. Joseph Vijay takes oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister:In Tamil Nadu, the founder of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), C. Joseph Vijay, was sworn in as the Chief Minister this morning. The swearing-in ceremony was held at Nehru Indoor Stadium at 10 AM.
  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted an extensive, long-duration test of its Actively Cooled Full-Scale Scramjet Combustor in Hyderabad.
  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) organised the Mind Activation Through Education 'MATE' Counselors’ Conclave in New Delhi yesterday. The event marks the expansion of Project MATE, which is an adolescent well-being initiative developed by AIIMS New Delhi. The initiative is aimed at promoting emotional, social and psychological well-being among middle-school students alongside academic growth.

International

  • India, Trinidad and Tobago sign eight agreements during S Jaishankar’s visit:India and Trinidad and Tobago have signed eight agreements in sectors including tourism, healthcare, infrastructure and Ayurveda during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s two-day visit to the Caribbean nation.
  • Iran submits formal response to latest US proposal aimed at ending West Asia conflict:Iran has formally submitted its response to the latest US proposal aimed at ending the war in West Asia. Iranian State Media confirmed that the response has been handed over, stating that negotiations at this stage will focus on ending the conflict in the region.

  • India will host the 1st International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit in New Delhi from June 1st - 2nd, 2026. Spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this inaugural summit focuses on conserving seven major big cat species—Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma—through global collaboration, anti-poaching measures, and habitat protection.
  • WHO advises 42-day monitoring for passengers and crew after hantavirus outbreak on cruise ship:The World Health Organization (WHO) has advised that everyone aboard the cruise ship affected by the hantavirus outbreak should be treated as high-risk contacts and actively monitored for 42 days.
  • EAM Dr S Jaishankar visits Nelson Island in Trinidad and Tobago with PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar.Nelson Island is the place where the Indian indentured labourers, Girmitiyas, first arrived in Trinidad and Tobago.

Economy and banking

  • New Delhi gears up for 4th India Africa Forum Summit :Top leaders from Africa, including several Heads of State and Heads of Government will attend the 4th India Africa Forum Summit which will take place in New Delhi on 31st of this month. Over the past decade, India has significantly expanded its diplomatic and political footprint across the continent. In the past decade, there have been nearly 50 high level visits from India to African countries and close to 100 visits from African leaders to India. New Delhi has also opened 17 new diplomatic missions in Africa since 2018, taking its presence to 46 countries. India has provided more than 190 lines of credit worth more than 10 billion dollars to 41 African states so far. A total of 220 projects worth 4.5 billion dollars have been completed. India is also among Africa’s top five investors and the fourth-largest trading partner.The third India Africa Forum summit was hosted in New Delhi in October 2015.

 Appointments

  • Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan has been appointed as the next Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, headquartered in Mumbai. He will take charge of one of the Indian Navy’s most strategically important commands, responsible for safeguarding India’s western maritime front and key sea lanes in the Arabian Sea. He is currently serving as the Vice Chief of Naval Staff.

Sports and culture

  • ISSF World Cup: Neeru Dhanda and Vivaan Kapoor win bronze in trap mixed team event-In Shooting, Indian pair of Neeru Dhanda and Vivaan Kapoor secured a bronze medal in the trap mixed team event as India concluded its campaign on a positive note at the ISSF World Cup Shotgun in Almaty, Kazakhstan, today. It was the first ISSF World Cup podium finish for Neeru and Vivaan in an Olympic event, and India’s second medal overall since the mixed team trap was included in the Olympic programme last year.
  • In Archey, Indian women's recurve team of Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and Kumkum Mohod defeated hosts China in a dramatic shoot-off to clinch the gold medal at the Archery World Cup Stage 2 in Shanghai today

  • World Lupus Day is being observed today globally. The day is marked to raise awareness about Lupus, which is a complex autoimmune disease affecting millions worldwide. Lupus has no known cure and often has devastating impacts on daily life. The theme for this year is “Make Lupus Visible”, as too often, Lupus remains unseen, its symptoms are misunderstood, and its impact is overlooked.
  • Mother's Day 2026 is celebrated on Sunday, May 10, 2026, in India, the USA, and many other countries, honoring mothers and maternal bonds on the second Sunday of May.
    • Origins: Established by Anna Jarvis in 1908 to honor her own mother’s legacy and later recognized by President Wilson in 1914.Her mother had frequently expressed a desire to establish such a holiday, and after her mother's death, Jarvis led the movement for the commemoration

  • Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and organs, causing widespread inflammation and damage to joints, skin, kidneys, heart, and lungs. It is highly variable, often featuring "flares" (symptoms increase) and "remissions" (few symptoms). While there is no cure, medications can manage symptoms.
  • Indentured labourers were individuals bound by contract to work, usually for 5+ years, in exchange for transport, housing, and food, largely rising in British colonies after abolishing slavery (1833). Over 1.6 million Indian workers were transported to places like Mauritius, the Caribbean, and Fiji, often facing coercion, harsh conditions, and exploitation despite promises of wages.
  • Trinidad and Tobago is a dual-island Caribbean nation near Venezuela, with distinctive Creole traditions and cuisines.   • The Actively Cooled Full-Scale Scramjet Combustor is a breakthrough propulsion system engineered by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to sustain long-duration hypersonic flight exceeding Mach 5. Developed indigenously by the Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad, this technology marks a transition from short-burst technology demonstration to the operational weaponization of hypersonic cruise missiles.
