National

  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the new premises of Indian Institute of Gems and Jewellery in Udupi today. Speaking on this occasion, she said that the new training institute will provide professional training to youth and young entrepreneurs.The institute is equipped with 41 jewellery manufacturing, CAD, casting, testing and finishing machinery, and full production line facilities. Nirmala Sitaraman witnessed the signing of MoU between the Institute and IIT Madras for a specialised industry-oriented certification programme in lab-grown diamond technologies.
  • Union Minister for Railways and Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw, along with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, laid the foundation stone of the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam today.
  • INS Sunayna arrived at Changi Naval Base in Singapore, marking her fourth port call under the vision of MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions). The Ministry of Defence said that the ship had completed port calls at MalĂ©, Phuket, and Jakarta prior to its arrival in Singapore.
  • Meghalaya declares Khasi and Garo as official languages alongside English-The Meghalaya Official Language Ordinance, 2026 has received the assent of Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar, making Khasi and Garo the official languages of the state, alongside English. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced this development through a social media post.

International

  • UAE OPEC+ exit:The United Arab Emirates has announced it will exit the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and the broader OPEC+ alliance, with the decision taking effect from May 1, 2026. The move follows a comprehensive review of national production policy, capacity, and long-term economic priorities.Bangladesh’s first nuclear plant :Bangladesh moved a step closer to nuclear power generation today as uranium fuel loading began at Unit-1 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, marking a historic milestone in the country’s energy sector. With the start of fuel loading, Bangladesh is set to become the world’s 33rd country to generate electricity using nuclear energy. The process marks the final stage before trial electricity generation begins.
  • Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today congratulated Oil India Limited and Indian Oil Corporation Limited for the successful new oil and gas discovery in the contract area of the Ghadames Basin, Libya.
  • SCO Defence Ministers’ Meeting:Defence Minister Rajnath Singh attended the SCO meet in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, strengthening India’s Eurasian ties

Sports and culture

  • In sports, Indian lifters have delivered an impressive performance at the Commonwealth Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Apia, Samoa, securing four gold medals on the second day of competition.Sunil Singh clinched gold in the men’s 65-kilogram category with a total lift of 271 kilograms. Aisangfa Gogoi won the top prize in the women’s 58-kilogram category, lifting a total of 185 kilograms. Abhinob Gogoi secured gold in the men’s 71 kg division with a total of 284 kilograms.

  • World Day for Safety and Health at Work is being observed on 28th April globally. This day focuses on preventing work-related accidents and diseases, raising awareness, and fostering a positive safety culture. In 2003, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) began to observe this day in order to stress the prevention of accidents and diseases at work.
  • South Africa’s freedom is celebrated annually on April 27th as Freedom Day, marking the historic 1994 democratic elections that ended the oppressive apartheid regime. This pivotal transition allowed all citizens of voting age, regardless of race, to participate in a free and fair national election.On April 27, 1994, millions of Black South Africans cast their ballots for the first time. The African National Congress (ANC) won, and Nelson Mandela became the country’s first Black president, uniting a deeply divided nation.
