- Lieutenant Governor approves creation of five new districts in Ladakh-In Ladakh, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has approved the creation of five new districts in the Union Territory, taking the total number of districts to seven. The newly created districts are Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Drass. Earlier, Ladakh had only two districts: Leh and Kargil.
- SHANTI Act aims to boost private sector role in nuclear energy expansion:-Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy Dr Jitendra Singh today said that policy support and the SHANTI Act are expected to facilitate greater participation of the private sector in scaling up the country’s nuclear energy capacity and achieve the 100-gigawatt nuclear energy target by 2047.
- Fossil Bed dating back to Holocene period discovered in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu-A Fossil Bed dating back to the Holocene period has been discovered in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. In a social media post, Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav said this discovery significantly enriches the Quaternary fossil record of the country. Highlighting the significance of this discovery, Mr Yadav said that it will help to understand India’s ancient wildlife, environment, and climate in a better way. He informed that the fossil sites were exposed by torrential rains in 2023. The Minister added that at the request of the Thoothukudi administration in Tamil Nadu, a field survey by the Zoological Survey of India was conducted.
- Nominations for the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar 2026 are now open for children aged between 5 and 18 years as of 31st July this year. The Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar is a prestigious national-level award conferred annually by the President of India to recognise the exceptional achievements of children across the country.
International
- India-New Zealand FTA; Deal facilitates 100% duty-free access for all Indian exports and 20 billion dollar investment by New Zealand-The Free Trade Agreement between India and New Zealand will advance a new Era of Economic Partnership and Opportunity. New Zealand has committed to facilitating investments of 20 billion dollars into India over the next fifteen years.
- Iran has reportedly offered to end its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the US lifting its blockade on the country and an end to the war.
- Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) -The 2026 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will begin today in New York. Convened by the United Nations, States Parties will gather over a period of four weeks to review progress on the NPT’s three pillars – disarmament, non-proliferation, and peaceful uses of nuclear energy. The 11th Review Conference of the NPT is taking place at a time of heightened international tension and armed conflict.

- Dinesh Trivedi appointed as India’s next High Commissioner to Bangladesh-The Ministry of External Affairs today announced the appointment of Dinesh Trivedi as the next High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh. A veteran politician, Trivedi has served as Union Minister for Railways and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the government led by Manmohan Singh. He has also represented West Bengal in both the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha.
Sports and culture
- In Badminton, the Indian men's team has secured a place in the quarterfinals of the Thomas Cup tournament at Horsens in Denmark. In a Group A match today, India defeated Australia 5-0.

- World Tapir Day is being observed today globally. This day is crucial to raise awareness about the species of Tapir and to protect it from human encroachment. Tapirs are large herbivorous mammals that inhabit jungle and forest regions of South America, Central America, and Southeast Asia.
- International Design Day is being celebrated today globally. This day commemorates the founding of the International Council of Design on the 27th of April, 1963.
