National
- Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw today marked the 173rd anniversary of the country’s first passenger train in India by sharing an image of the historic Thane railway bridge and an early train. The first passenger train in the country travelled between Bori Bunder in Mumbai and Thane on 16th of April in 1853.
- The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 introduced in Parliament: A three-day special session of Parliament commenced on April 16, 2026, to discuss historic constitutional changes regarding the representation of women and structural expansion.
- Key Provisions: The bill aims to fast-track the implementation of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies, aiming for structural application by the 2029 general elections.
- Lok Sabha Expansion: The bill proposes expanding the total strength of the Lok Sabha from 543 to 850 seats (815 for States and 35 for Union Territories) based on the 2011 Census allocations.
- The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs officially commenced its Swachhata Pakhwada on April 16, 2026, launching a fortnight-long cleanliness drive that ran until April 30, 2026.The initiative, designed to promote the spirit of the Swachh Bharat Mission and foster a clean, healthy, and sustainable work environment, featured several specific activities.
- The 3rd India–Norway Dialogue on Trade and Investment (DTI) was held in New Delhi on April 16, 2026, marking the first session following the implementation of the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) on October 1, 2025.
- Government has notified that an SEZ to be set up by M/s. Tata Semiconductor Manufacturing Private Limited exclusively for Electronic Hardware and Software including IT/ITES at Dholera, Gujarat. The SEZ will be spread over 66.166 hectares of land and is poised to provide employment to 21000 persons. The SEZ is designed to support electronic hardware, software, and IT-enabled services, and includes enabling infrastructure and a dedicated approval mechanism to streamline operations and logistics. This is India’s first chip fabrication plant.
International
- Austrian Chancellor’s Bilateral Visit to India: H.E. Dr. Christian Stocker, the Federal Chancellor of the Republic of Austria, arrived in New Delhi for an official state visit. On April 16, his high-level itinerary included a wreath-laying ceremony at Rajghat, delegation-level bilateral talks with PM Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House, the exchange of multiple MoUs, and a formal call on President Droupadi Murmu.

- NPCI Biometric UPI & ATM Guidelines: The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) updated active security caps for PIN-free financial transactions using biometric verification. Biometric-authenticated UPI payments are capped at ₹5,000 per transaction, while biometric cardless ATM cash withdrawals are regulated at a maximum of ₹10,000 per transaction to counter rising digital financial frauds.
