National

• ₹2,000 crore allocated for EV public charging stations.The Government has allocated ₹2,000 crore under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme for deployment of Electric Vehicle Public Charging Stations (EVPCS) across India.
• The PM E-DRIVE scheme has a total outlay of ₹10,900 crore and is being implemented from 1 April 2024.
• Parliament passes Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026.Parliament passed the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill, 2026, after the Rajya Sabha approved it on 4 August. The Lok Sabha had already passed the Bill.
• The legislation amends the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 and makes provisions relating to delayed registration more stringent.
• Birth/death reported after one year but within two years can be registered only after approval by the District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Magistrate or authorised Executive Magistrate.
• The approval is subject to verification of the authenticity of the event.The objective is to encourage timely reporting of births and deaths.
• MSP Policy: Government reaffirmed MSP for 22 crops at 1.5× cost of production, procured under PM‑AASHA.

International

• BRICS Anti‑Corruption Working Group Meeting: Held in Hyderabad (Aug 4–5) under India’s presidency; focused on asset recovery, transparency, and corruption risks in FinTech and digital assets.

Appointments

• Former International Air Transport Association (IATA) Director General Willie Walsh assumed charge as the Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, succeeding Pieter Elbers.
• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) appointed Monisha Chakraborty as an Executive Director with effect from 3 August 2026.She will oversee:Foreign Exchange Department,Financial Markets Regulation Department

Obituary

• Eminent educationist and philanthropist Dr D. Y. Patil passed away on 4 August 2026.: 
• He established a massive network of over 150 to 180 educational institutions, including universities, medical colleges, and engineering schools across Maharashtra and India, starting with his first engineering college in 1983.
• He served as the Governor of Bihar, West Bengal and Tripura. He was a leader of the Indian National Congress from Maharashtra state.
•  He received the Padma Shri award in 1991 for social work. 
• On 24 December 2018, he joined the Nationalist Congress Party

Days Observed

• Aug 04:International Clouded Leopard Day was observed on 4 August 2026.India marked the occasion by launching the Clouded Leopard Conservation Action Plan.The species is particularly associated with the forests of Northeast India.

• Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA) is an umbrella scheme launched by the Government of India in September 2018 to ensure remunerative prices to farmers for their produce.
• Key Objectives
• Provide fair and profitable prices to farmers for pulses, oilseeds, and copra.
• Prevent distress sales during peak harvest seasons when market prices drop below the Minimum Support Price (MSP).
• Stabilize consumer food prices and reduce market volatility for essential commodities.
• Core Components
• Price Support Scheme (PSS): Central and state agencies physically procure pulses, oilseeds, and copra at the MSP when market rates fall below the official threshold.
• Price Deficiency Payment Scheme (PDPS): The government pays the difference between the MSP and the average market price directly to the farmer's bank account without physical procurement.
• Private Procurement & Stockist Scheme (PPPS): Involves private players in procurement operations to pilot alternative market-driven support models. [
• Implementation and Funding
• Administered primarily through central nodal agencies like NAFED and the NCCF alongside state-designated bodies.
• Financial allocations have scaled up, with the budget reaching ₹7,200 crore for the 2026–27 fiscal period to strengthen procurement infrastructure.
