  • Viksit Vibrant Village Programme:Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with participants of the Viksit Vibrant Village Programme 2026 on 26 July.The programme focuses on India's border villages and aims to promote their development, connectivity, livelihood opportunities and integration with the national development process.The initiative is particularly important for strengthening India's border areas and strategic infrastructure
  • Customs Approval for Vizhinjam International Seaport:India’s first dedicated deep-water transshipment port, Vizhinjam Port (Kerala), secured official Indian Customs clearance to begin full commercial import-export (EXIM) operations.

RBI Projects India's FY2026–27 GDP Growth at 6.6%:The Reserve Bank of India's July 2026 Bulletin projected India's real GDP growth for FY2026–27 at 6.6%.The outlook was supported by resilient domestic demand, industrial activity and services-sector performance, although global economic uncertainty remains a concern.

  • Pralhad Joshi Takes Charge of Ministry of Education:Union Minister Pralhad Joshi will be the new Education Minister following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan. Mr Joshi has been assigned the charge of the Ministry of Education, in addition to his existing portfolio. Mr Joshi is currently serving as the minister of consumer affairs, Food and public distribution and New and renewable energy.

Sports and culture

  • Mirabai Chanu Wins Gold at Commonwealth Games 2026:Indian weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in the women's 48 kg category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.She lifted a combined 190 kg, securing India's first gold medal of the Games.
  • Anahat Singh Wins World Junior Squash Championship:Indian squash player Anahat Singh created history by becoming the first Indian to win the World Junior Squash Championship.
  • Opening match of Durand Football Cup to be played in Ranchi today:The 135th edition of the Durand Cup will, for the first time, be played in Ranchi, marking a significant milestone in Jharkhand's sporting history

  • 26 July:International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem:26 July is observed as the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem.The day was proclaimed by UNESCO to raise awareness about the importance of mangrove ecosystems.
  • 26 July:India observed the 27th Kargil Vijay Diwas on 26 July 2026, commemorating India's victory in the 1999 Kargil War.The day honours the courage and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces during Operation Vijay, through which Indian forces successfully reclaimed positions occupied by Pakistani intruders in the Kargil–Drass sector.The Kargil conflict began in May 1999 and concluded with India's victory in July 1999.

  • Operation Vijay: Code name for the Indian Army’s ground operation to recapture the peaks in Jammu & Kashmir (now Ladakh).
  • Operation Safed Sagar: Code name for the Indian Air Force's air support operations during the conflict.
  • Operation Talwar: Code name for the Indian Navy's aggressive fleet deployment in the North Arabian Sea to deter Pakistani sea lanes.

Vizhinjam International Seaport:
  • Located near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

  • India's first deep-water, automated, transshipment container hub capable of handling ultra-large container vessels.
The Durand Cup 
  • The Durand Cup is the oldest football tournament in Asia and the third-oldest in the world. Established in 1888, it acts as the traditional curtain-raiser for the Indian domestic football season.
