National

  • The Digital India Programme completes 11 years on 1 July 2026, marking a major milestone in India’s digital transformation journey. Before 2015, public services often meant long queues, paperwork, and limited connectivity. Digital India helped bridge the digital divide by expanding internet access and bringing services online. It strengthened digital governance and made services faster, transparent, and more accessible.
  • Nationwide Implementation of Viksit Bharat – G RAM G Act
    • The Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) [VB–G RAM G] Act came into force nationwide on July 1, 2026.
    • Key Highlight: Replaces and repeals the historic Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), 2005.
    • Key Provisions:
    • 125 Days Guarantee: Statutory wage employment guarantee increased to 125 days per financial year per rural household (up from 100 days under MGNREGA).
    • Financial Allocation: Historic allocation of ₹95,692 Crore to accelerate rural livelihoods and infrastructure.
    • Unemployment Allowance: Mandates wage transfer within prescribed timelines, failing which unemployment allowance is payable.
    • Continuity: Existing MGNREGA job cards remain valid without interruption of ongoing works.
    • The national average wage has risen from 298.8 rupees per day under MGNREGA to 327.4 rupees per day under VB-G RAM G, marking an average increase of over 10%. Twenty-one States and administrative units, which previously had wages below 300 rupees, have now been brought up to the new benchmark.
  • Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) has completed more than 10 years of advancing irrigation-led agricultural transformation through sustainable water management and the expansion of irrigation coverage. Launched on 1 July 2015, PMKSY scheme has assured irrigation, improved on-farm water efficiency, and promoted sustainable water conservation across the country

International

  • Prime Minister of Japan Sanae Takaichi arrived in New Delhi this evening on a three-day visit to India. Prime Minister Takaichi was received by Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh. This is the first official visit of Prime Minister Takaichi to India.

Economy and banking

  • Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, EPFO has officially notified an 8.25 percent interest rate on EPF deposits for financial year 2025-26. The ratings have been declared following approval of the Ministry of Labour and Employment as per the EPF Scheme, 1952.
  • MECON Achieves Miniratna Category-I Status with Net Worth Surpassing ₹535 Crore:The Ministry of Steel has approved the grant of Miniratna Category-I status to MECON Limited, a Schedule ‘A’ Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the administrative control of the Ministry of Steel. MECON has achieved significant financial milestones in recent years. The Company has reported continuous profits during the last three financial years.
    • The Miniratna Category-I status provides enhanced financial and operational autonomy to the Board of MECON Limited. The enhanced delegation of powers will enable the Company to undertake investments, modernization initiatives, technological upgradation and business expansion projects with greater flexibility and speed, thereby supporting its future growth trajectory.
    • MECON Limited, established in 1959 and headquartered in Ranchi, is one of India's premier engineering, consultancy, project management and contracting organizations

Appointments

  • The government today gave a one-year extension to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri till 14th July next year. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved a one-year extension in service for Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who is a 1989 batch IFS officer, beyond 14th July this year.
  • Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit today assumed charge as the Vice Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force. He succeeds Air Marshal Nagesh Kapoor, who retired yesterday after four decades of service.
  • Air Marshal Tejinder Singh today took over as the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC).
  • Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain today assumed the appointment of the Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
  • The Government has appointed Somnath Ghosh as the next High Commissioner of India to Malaysia. Mr. Ghosh, an Indian Foreign Service officer of the 1997 batch, is presently serving as Consul General of India in Chicago.
  • The current Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army is General Dhiraj Seth, who assumed office as the 31st chief on June 30, 2026, succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi.

  • CA Day (Chartered Accountants Day) is celebrated in India on July 1 each year. It marks the founding of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in 1949. The day honors the hard work of finance experts in keeping the economy strong.
  • The 63rd Foundation Day of the Tripura Legislative Assembly was observed today.
  • National Doctors Day is being celebrated today across the country to honour doctors for their dedication, compassion, and invaluable contribution to protecting and improving public health. The day is observed every year on the 1st of July to commemorate the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, one of India’s most respected physicians. The theme for this year is “Behind the Mask: Who Heals the Healers?”.
