• The Hemis Festival 2026 commences today with great enthusiasm and devotion at the historic Hemis Monastery in the Leh district of the Union Territory of Ladakh. The two-day festival attracts thousands of devotees, tourists, cultural enthusiasts, and Buddhist scholars from across India and abroad.
• Tamil Nadu government has approved the “Vetri Thamizhagam” vision document. A key initiative under the document is the “Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam”, meaning the Maternal Uncle’s Gold Ring Scheme.Under the scheme, a one-gram gold ring will be presented to newborns of families permanently residing in Tamil Nadu, provided the delivery takes place in government hospitals.
• Centre Tightens FCRA Compliance for NGOs:The updated 2026 Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) rules introduce stricter transparency measures for NGOs. Key mandates include targeted purpose-based registration, disclosing all social media accounts, a minimum spending limit of ₹10 lakh on foreign contributions over two years, and tracing the ultimate source of donor-advised funds.
• Location & Activity Limits: NGOs must declare the exact states and specific activities (from a fixed legal schedule) where foreign funds will be used. Existing NGOs have one year to update this.
• No Religious Conversion: While faith-based work, scripts, and community kitchens are allowed, the rules explicitly ban proselytisation (religious conversion) using foreign funds.
• The 75% Spending Rule: If operating via Prior Permission, you must utilize at least 75% of your current installment before the next batch of funds is released.
• The ₹10 Lakh License Rule: To renew an FCRA license, an NGO must have spent at least ₹10 lakh on its declared goals over the previous two financial years.
• Strict Control on Top Bosses: The term "key functionary" now includes trustees, directors, and partners. Organizations with foreign nationals in these roles will ordinarily be denied a license.
• Digital & Donor Footprint: NGOs must disclose all official websites, social media handles, and publications. They must also trace and name the ultimate original donor if funds come via intermediaries.
• Programme BHARATI :The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has successfully concluded the first cohort of its flagship export acceleration programme, Bharat’s Hub for Agritech, Resilience, Advancement and Incubation for Export Innovation (BHARATI). The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said that the initiative aims to foster innovation-led growth in the agri-food export sector. It also aimed to support India’s target of achieving 50 billion US dollars in exports of APEDA-scheduled products by 2030.
• The two-day Textiles Summit 2026 organised by the Ministry of Textiles, concluded in New Delhi today. The summit brought together representatives from State Governments, industry, and academia, fostering collaborative dialogue on the sector’s growth and future roadmap.
• The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) welcomed Queen Máxima of the Netherlands.The MEA said that her visit, in her capacity as UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health, reflects the shared commitment to advancing financial inclusion.
• NMCG Scales Up Urban River Management Plans Across 60 Ganga Basin Cities:National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), in collaboration with the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), has expanded Urban River Management Plans (URMP) across the Ganga Basin. The Jal Shakti Ministry said that the Management Plans are supported as part of the Namami Gange Programme.
• The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Keralam welcomed its 1,000th commercial vessel this evening. The landmark achievement was clocked with the arrival of the massive mother ship, MSC Luciana. With this achievement, Vizhinjam has cemented its reputation as one of the fastest-growing ports in the world, having handled 1,000 ships in less than two years since it commenced operations.The port’s historic journey began on July 11, 2024.
• The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) officially transferred excavated human skeletal remains from the iconic Harappan site of Rakhigarhi (Haryana) to the Anthropological Survey of India in Kolkata for advanced structural and genetic profiling.Rakhigarhi is the largest known ancient Harappan (Indus Valley Civilization) site in India, spanning approximately 350 to 550 hectares across 11 interconnected mounds. Located in the Hisar district of Haryana, about 150 km northwest of Delhi, the site dates back over 5,000 years.

• The United Nations established the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI to assess global AI risks and opportunities. Comprising 40 multidisciplinary experts, it functions similarly to the IPCC for climate change, synthesizing scientific evidence to guide global policy. Co-chaired by AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio and journalist Maria Ressa.Yoshua Bengio is a Canadian computer scientist, and a pioneer of artificial neural networks and deep learning. Prof. B. Ravindran (IIT Madras) represents India.
• The European Union officially joined Pax Silica in June 2026.Pax Silica is a United States-led strategic initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation among democratic allies regarding artificial intelligence supply chains, advanced semiconductors, export controls, and secure digital infrastructure.

• Index of Services Production (ISP):The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is preparing to launch Index of Services Production (ISP) in July, 2026, which shall be a new macro indicator to measure the short-term changes in the growth of the services sector. As counterpart of the IIP which measures the economic growth of the industrial sector, ISP will cover the formal services sector and will be released on a monthly basis.
