  • Suvendu Adhikari takes oath as first BJP CM of West Bengal:Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday. Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Adhikari at a grand ceremony held at the Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata.
  • Vijay stakes claim to form govt in Tamil Nadu with support of Congress, VCK, IUML, Left parties:TVK Chief C Joseph Vijay met Governor Rajendra Arlekar at Lok Bhawan in Chennai on Saturday and staked claim to form government in In Tamil Nadu with the support of 120 MLAs. Mr Vijay is set to take oath as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday.
  • India conducted a successful Flight trial of an Advanced Agni missile with MIRV (Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle) system from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha on Friday. In a social media post, the Defence Ministry said that the missile was flight tested with Multiple payloads, targeted to different targets spatially distributed over a large geographical area in the Indian Ocean Region.

  • Andheri Railway Station Post Office Inaugurated Under Jan Sewa Connect Initiative:The renovated Andheri Railway Station Post Office in Mumbai became the first post office in Maharashtra and the second in the country to be inaugurated under India Post’s Jan Sewa Connect initiative. The modernised facility was inaugurated by Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday as part of the Department of Posts’ efforts to transform traditional post offices into digitally empowered and customer-centric service hubs.
  • PM Gram Sadak Yojana -The silver jubilee celebrations marking 25 years of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) and the national launch of PMGSY-IV will be held on Sunday in Bhairunda of Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district. Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will lead the programme.
  • NALSA organises National Lok Adalat across country to provide amicable settlement of disputes.National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) is organising the second National Lok Adalat of 2026 across the country today

International

  • Peter Magyar Sworn In as Hungary’s New Prime Minister:Peter Magyar, a centre-right politician, was sworn in as Hungary’s new Prime Minister after winning a decisive victory over nationalist leader Viktor Orbán in the April 12 election. The result ended Orbán’s 16 years in power and gave Magyar’s Tisza Party a constitutional majority.
  • Russian President Putin Addresses Victory Day Parade, Reaffirms Confidence in Russia’s Ukraine War Stance:Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed confidence in Russia’s victory in Ukraine while overseeing the Victory Day military parade at Red Square, marking the 81st anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Economy and banking

  • PM Modi highlights impact of PMJJBY, PMSBY, Atal Pension Yojana launched 11 years ago-All three Jan Suraksha social security schemes—PMJJBY, PMSBY, and Atal Pension Yojana—were officially launched on May 9, 2015. They were introduced simultaneously by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an event in Kolkata, West Bengal.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued amended directions easing norms for inclusion of quarterly profits in Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital for calculation of Capital to Risk Weighted Assets Ratio (CRAR) by banks.The revised norms apply to commercial banks, small finance banks and payments banks, and come into force with immediate effect.

Appointments

  • The Government has appointed Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan as the next Chief of the Naval Staff.Ministry of Defence said that Vice Admiral Swaminathan is currently serving as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.
  • The Government has appointed Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS).Ministry of Defence said that Lt Gen Subramani will also serve as Secretary, Department of Military Affairs, with effect from the date of assumption of charge and until further orders.He will assume office after General Anil Chauhan completes his tenure on the 30th of May.

Sports and culture

  • Sahil Jadhav won a bronze medal in the men’s individual compound event at the Archery World Cup 2026 Stage 2 in Shanghai, China, on Saturday. The 25-year-old Maharashtra archer defeated Denmark veteran player-cum-coach Martin Damsbo 147-144 in the bronze medal playoff to secure India’s first medal of the ongoing tournament. India won five compound medals in Shanghai last year.

  • Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary is celebrated on 25th Boishakh (Pochishe Boishakh), a date in the Bengali calendar that usually falls on May 7th or 8th. In 2026, the 165th birth anniversary of the Nobel laureate poet was observed on May 7th-9th, with major celebrations in India and Bangladesh honoring his vast contributions to literature, music, and art.

  • Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar (Clean Coast, Safe Sea) is a major annual, citizen-led coastal cleanup campaign initiated by India's Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) to combat marine litter, particularly plastic pollution, and promote ocean health. A one-week campaign, starting September 12, 2026, will target India’s 7,516 km coastline.
  • Lok Adalat translates to "People's Court". It is an alternative dispute resolution mechanism in India where pending or pre-litigation disputes are settled amicably through compromise
