  • Cabinet approves increase in the Judge strength of the Supreme Court of India by Four to 37 from 33-The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today has approved the proposal for introducing The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament to amend The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956 for increasing the number of Judges of the Supreme Court of India by 4 from the present 33 to 37 (excluding the Chief Justice of India).
  • Cabinet approves Ship Repair Facility at Vadinar, Gujarat"The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, today has approved the development of a state‑of‑the‑art Ship Repair Facility at Vadinar, Gujarat, marking a major expansion of the national ship repair ecosystem. The project will be jointly implemented by Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), with a combined investment of Rs.1,570 crore.
  • Fire Safety Week 2026 was observed nationwide from May 4 to May 10, led by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The campaign focused heavily on healthcare infrastructure and public spaces, aiming to reduce fire hazards and improve emergency response.

International

  • Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs) Record Robust Credit Growth of 15.9% in FY 2025-26, Reflecting Strong Economic Activity and Credit Demand.
  • India Retains Position as World’s Second-Largest Steel Producer:An official release has said that share of global crude steel production rose from 5.2 per cent in 2014 to 7.9 per cent in 2024.China is the world's undisputed largest steel-producing country, accounting for over half of global crude steel production. It is followed closely by India as the second-largest producer, with Japan, the United States, and Russia rounding out the top five global producers.
  • NSE Launches Electronic Gold Receipts to Formalise Gold Market:EGRs are dematerialised securities that represent ownership of physical gold, which is stored in the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) accredited vaults and held electronically through depositories. Each EGR is fully backed by physical gold and can be traded on the exchange, integrating gold into the formal financial system.

  • India Retains No. 1 Spot in World T20I Rankings:India has retained its position at the top of the ICC Men's T20I rankings, showcasing their dominance in the cricketing world. India had created history by becoming the first team to successfully defend their T20 World Cup title and also win it for a record-extending third time in March.
