Today, January 26, 2026, India celebrates its 77th Republic Day, a landmark occasion commemorating the day the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950. The theme for this year's celebrations is "150 Years of Vande Mataram," honoring the legacy of the national song.


77th Republic Day: Key Highlights

Chief Guests & Diplomacy

In a significant diplomatic gesture, India hosted dual Chief Guests from the European Union:

  • Ursula von der Leyen: President of the European Commission.

  • Antonio Costa: President of the European Council.

    Their presence at Kartavya Path signals strengthening India-EU strategic and trade ties.

The Parade at Kartavya Path

  • Theme: "स्वतंत्रता का मंत्र - वंदे मातरम" (Mantra of Freedom - Vande Mataram) and "समृद्धि का मंत्र - आत्मनिर्भर भारत" (Mantra of Prosperity - Self-reliant India).

  • Historical Tribute: A series of 1923 paintings by artist Tejendra Kumar Mitra, illustrating the verses of Vande Mataram, were displayed as view-cutters along the parade route.

  • Military Might: The Indian Army showcased a phased battle array for the first time. Major displays included T-90 tanks, Arjun main battle tanks, BrahMos missile systems, and mock-ups from Operation Sindoor.

  • Tableaux: 30 vibrant tableaux (17 from States/UTs and 13 from Ministries) rolled down the path, showcasing India's cultural diversity and technological progress.


Gallantry & Padma Awards 2026

Gallantry Awards

President Droupadi Murmu approved 70 Gallantry awards to Armed Forces and CAPF personnel:

  • Ashoka Chakra: Conferred upon Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla (IAF), the first Indian astronaut-designate for the ISS.

  • Kirti Chakra: Awarded to Major Arshdeep Singh, Naib Subedar Doleshwar Subba, and Group Captain Prasanth Balakrishnan Nair.

  • Shaurya Chakra: 13 personnel were honored, including Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A for their maritime excellence.

Padma Awards

A total of 131 Padma Awards were announced on the eve of Republic Day:

  • Padma Vibhushan: Recipients include legendary violinist Ms. N. Rajam, actor Dharmendra Singh Deol (Posthumous), and former Kerala CM V.S. Achuthanandan (Posthumous).

  • Padma Shri (Sports): Honorees include Indian cricket captains Rohit Sharma and Harmanpreet Kaur, and hockey star Savita Punia.


National & International Observances

International Customs Day

Coinciding with Republic Day, January 26 is also observed globally as International Customs Day.

  • 2026 Theme: "Customs protecting society through vigilance and commitment."

  • Focus: Highlighting the role of customs authorities in facilitating legitimate trade while ensuring border security and public health.

President’s Address

In her address on the eve of Republic Day, President Droupadi Murmu emphasized:

  • The transition toward a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) as a shared responsibility.

  • The rise of Nari Shakti (Women Power) in decisive roles across space, sports, and the armed forces.

  • The unifying power of patriotism and the constitutional bedrock of the world's largest republic.
