5. Science and Technology

5.1 Pumped Storage Hydropower Gains Importance in India's Clean Energy Transition

A government backgrounder published by PIB on 19 October highlighted pumped storage hydropower (PSH) as an important technology for improving electricity storage and grid reliability.

Pumped storage is often described as a “water battery.” It stores energy by pumping water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir when electricity is available in excess. When electricity demand increases, the stored water is released through turbines to generate power.

Its main advantages include:

  • Storing surplus electricity from renewable energy sources.

  • Helping balance fluctuations in solar and wind power generation.

  • Supporting grid stability and reliable electricity supply.

  • Providing flexible power generation during periods of high demand.

According to the PIB backgrounder, India's installed non-fossil-fuel electricity generation capacity had crossed 300 GW as of July 2026. India has set a target of 500 GW of non-fossil-fuel capacity by 2030.
