    • The treaty splits the Indus River system geographically into Eastern and Western rivers, governing an 80-20 distribution of water volume:

    • The Western Rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab): Allocated for exclusive use by Pakistan. They represent the remaining 80% of the water flow.
    • India's Limited Rights on Western Rivers: India is permitted to tap into the Western rivers for specified, non-consumptive purposes. This includes domestic use, limited agricultural irrigation, and run-of-the-river hydroelectric power projects. India is strictly prohibited from storing or diverting large volumes of water that would lower the flow into Pakistan.
    • Permanent Indus Commission: The treaty established a bilateral commission where commissioners from both countries meet regularly to manage technical data and settle disputes.
