  • The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration prohibited the sale, free distribution, advertising and promotion of foods high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) within a 50-metre radius of schools and colleges.The advisory is aimed at improving children's nutrition and reducing risks associated with unhealthy diets
  • PM-KISAN Extended Up to 2030–31:The Union Cabinet approved continuation of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme from 2026–27 to 2030–31.The scheme has been allocated ₹3.15 lakh crore for the five-year period.Eligible farmer families continue to receive ₹6,000 annually, paid in three equal instalments through Direct Benefit Transfer.

  • Samudra Manthan Offshore Exploration Scheme Approved:The Union Cabinet approved the Samudra Manthan – National Offshore Exploration Scheme with an outlay of ₹84,084 crore.The scheme aims to accelerate exploration of offshore oil and gas resources, especially in deepwater and ultra-deepwater areas, and strengthen India's energy security.
  • India's Navigation System Faces Satellite Availability Challenge:India's NavIC system has faced challenges regarding the number of operational satellites available for independent navigation services.NavIC is India's regional satellite navigation system developed by ISRO.

  • The Central KYC (CKYC) 2.0 framework became operational from 1 August 2026:The initiative aims to simplify customer onboarding and create a more seamless "One KYC" ecosystem across financial institutions.

  • Vice Admiral A.N. Pramod assumed charge as the Deputy Chief of Naval Staff on 1 August 2026.The appointment is important in the senior leadership structure of the Indian Navy.
  • Air Marshal Tejpal Singh assumed the appointment of Deputy Chief of the Air Staff on 1 August 2026.

Sports and culture

  • The 135th edition of the Durand Cup Football commenced with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai in Guwahati today. The Asia’s oldest football tournament is being jointly organized by the Indian Army and the Government of Assam.

Awards and recognition

  • National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was today conferred with the Lokmanya Tilak National Award 2026 at a function held at Pune today. The award instituted by the Lokmanya Tilak Smarak Trust was presented by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the occasion of the 106th death anniversary of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

Obituary

  • Renowned Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, who captivated the world with his record-breaking ascent of all 14 of the planet's 8,000-metre peaks in just over six months, died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan occupied territory of Gilgit-Baltistan.

  • World Breastfeeding Week 2026 is being observed from 1–7 August.The 2026 theme is:“Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works.”The campaign is coordinated internationally by WABA,(World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action) with support from WHO and UNICEF.
  • August 1: The death anniversary of Bal Gangadhar Tilak is observed every year on August 1st, marking the day he passed away in 1920.Famous Slogan-He gave the famous call for self-rule: "Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it!"
  • 1 August:World Lung Cancer Day-World Lung Cancer Day is observed every year on 1 August to raise awareness about lung cancer, its risk factors, prevention, early detection and treatment.The observance is associated with the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS).
