• "E-Samudra" Maritime Portal Operationalized:The Directorate General of Shipping formally expanded the E-Samudra portal, a single-window digital governance platform for maritime certification, vessel clearance, and seafarer administration.
• First Post-Independence Caste Enumeration in Ladakh (Census 2027):Event: The Union Territory of Ladakh commenced its population enumeration phase for Census 2027, making it the first region in independent India to record open-column caste data.
• Constitutional & Legal Basis: Governed by the Census Act, 1948. The Union Home Ministry oversees the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India (RGCCI).
• Methodology Exception: Conducted using paper-based schedules due to high-altitude terrain and connectivity constraints, serving as an exception to the national digital census architecture.
• Key Landmark: Previous comprehensive caste data dated back to the 1931 Census (used by the Mandal Commission in 1980). Unlike the rigid Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes presidential orders, Ladakh utilized an open self-declaration column.
• Param Pragya AI supercomputer inaugurated:Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Param Pragya AI supercomputing facility at the IIT Delhi Sonipat Campus.The facility is aimed at strengthening India's high-performance computing and artificial-intelligence research capabilities.
• India's first commercial large-format additive manufacturing facility:Lohia Aerospace Systems Pvt Ltd (LASPL) and Israel-based Massivit signed an MoU to establish India's first commercial large-format additive manufacturing facility.The facility will be established at Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, with an investment estimated at US$8–10 million. 

International

• A total solar eclipse is scheduled for 12 August 2026, with totality visible across parts of Greenland, Iceland and Spain, among other regions.
• Solar eclipse: Moon comes between the Sun and Earth
• Total solar eclipse: Sun is completely obscured by the Moon for observers within the path of totality.

Economy and banking

• RBI identifies 17 NBFCs for Upper Layer:The Reserve Bank of India identified 17 Non-Bankin Financial Companies (NBFCs) for inclusion in the Upper Layer (NBFC-UL) for FY 2026–27.
• NBFC-UL refers to the upper regulatory layer created by RBI for NBFCs that may pose greater systemic risk because of their size, complexity or interconnectedness.
• Parliament has passed the Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill, 2026, with the Rajya Sabha approving it today. Lok Sabha has already passed the Bill. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman moved the Bill, which aims to modernise the legal framework to meet the requirements of the present banking system. The Bill seeks to provide a law relating to evidence with respect to bankers’ books and to align it with contemporary digital banking practices. The Bill also has a provision that an electronic or digital record of a banker’s book will be admissible, valid, and legally enforceable as evidence.Key highlights
• Replaces Colonial Law: Repeals and replaces the 135-year-old Bankers’ Books Evidence Act, 1891.
• Recognition of Digital Records: Formally recognizes data stored in electronic, digital, virtual, and cloud environments, including backups and disaster-recovery servers.
• Admissibility of Certified Copies: Certified digital copies and printouts serve as prima facie evidence in court, eliminating the need to produce original servers or ledgers.
• Standardized Certification: Introduces standardized certificates to verify system integrity, normal computer operations, and non-tampering (aligning with current Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam standards).
• Protection for Bank Staff: Bank officials cannot be routinely summoned to testify in cases where the bank is not a party, unless a court orders it for a defined "special cause.
• "Defined "Special Cause": Clearly outlines circumstances—such as genuine doubt over record integrity or system failure—under which bank officers can be compelled to appear.
• Expanded Institutional Scope: Empowers the Central Government to extend these provisions beyond scheduled commercial banks to other financial entities.
• Investigative Access (Section 11): Allows law enforcement officers (rank of Superintendent of Police and above) to inspect and demand bank records during investigations without requiring a prior court order.

Appointments

• Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth created history by becoming the first woman fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force to complete the Fighter Combat Leader (FCL) course at the Tactics and Air Combat Development Establishment (TACDE), Gwalior.
• The government has extended the tenure of the Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Rahul Navin, by one year from the 13th of this month to the 13th of August next year. The extension in service will continue beyond his scheduled retirement on the 31st of July, 2027

• World Lion Day (August 10):Objective: Raises global awareness regarding the conservation of lions and threats to their natural habitat. India is home to the last surviving population of the Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica), strictly localized to the Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary and Greater Gir landscape in Gujarat.
• World Biofuel Day (August 10):Theme/Context: Commemorates Sir Rudolf Diesel’s successful test of a mechanical engine with peanut oil on August 10, 1893. Promotes non-fossil fuels (ethanol blending, biodiesel, and sustainable aviation fuels).
