• India crosses 300 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity:India achieved a major clean-energy milestone by crossing 300 GW of installed non-fossil fuel electricity capacity as of 31 July 2026.The total stood at 300.50 GW, accounting for more than 54% of India's total installed electricity-generation capacity.Break-up:

• Solar 164.59 GW
• Wind 58.14 GW
• Hydro 57.24 GW
• Bio-power 11.75 GW
• Nuclear 8.78 GW
• Total 300.50 GW

        India is targeting 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. The milestone represents more than         60% of that target.

• PMAY-Urban crosses 1 crore houses delivered:The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana–Urban (PMAY-U) achieved an important milestone, with more than 1.25 crore houses sanctioned and over 1 crore houses completed and delivered to beneficiaries.The government also highlighted that 1 crore houses have been allotted to women, strengthening the scheme's focus on women's ownership and empowerment.Under PMAY-U 2.0, the 8th Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee meeting approved an additional 2.09 lakh houses.
• CPGRAMS highlighted as India's flagship grievance-redressal platform:The Government highlighted the achievements of the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS).CPGRAMS connects Central Ministries, Departments, States and Union Territories on a single digital platform to facilitate grievance submission and resolution.The platform is administered by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG).

            It is an important example of digital governance and citizen-centric administration.

• The Har Ghar Tiranga 2026 campaign began on 9 August and is scheduled to continue until 17 August 2026.Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens to participate enthusiastically and display the national flag as part of the campaign.

International

• Cross-Border Trade Corridors: Bilateral border trade between India and China resumed across the designated traditional passes: Shipki La (Himachal Pradesh), Lipulekh (Uttarakhand), and Nathu La (Sikkim).
• The Indian Navy-US Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Exercise 2026 will be conducted at Southern Naval Command, Kochi, from tomorrow till 14th of this month.The five-day exercise will comprise Subject Matter Expert Exchanges, cross-training, equipment demonstrations and scenario-based practical exercises. The Ministry noted that the Indian Navy and US Navy have been conducting joint Salvage and EOD exercises since 2005 and the forthcoming engagement marks the eighth edition of this specialised bilateral training exercise.

Sports and culture

• Indian shuttler Ashmita Chaliha produced a superb comeback to win the Korea Masters 2026, beating China's Han Qian Xi in the women's singles final this morning. The Assam shuttler recovered from losing the opening game to prevail 14-21, 21-14, and 21-14 in 53 minutes and claim her first BWF title.

• Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak Conferred: The Union Government awarded the prestigious Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to the 12 rat-hole miners who executed the manual horizontal drilling to rescue 41 trapped workers during the Silkyara tunnel collapse in Uttarakhand

• August 09:International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples observed:The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was observed on 9 August 2026.
• The 2026 theme is:“Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being”
• The day highlights the rights, cultures, traditions and contributions of Indigenous Peoples around the world.
• The date commemorates the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations, held in Geneva in 1982. The UN General Assembly formally established the observance in 1994 through Resolution 49/214. 
• Nagasaki Peace Memorial Day (August 9): Commemorates the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945, with global ceremonies centered at the Peace Statue Plaza in Nagasaki Peace Park, Japan

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban (PMAY-U) 

• Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Urban (PMAY-U) is a flagship "Housing for All" mission launched by the Government of India's Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The central government has extended the PMAY-U implementation period up to September 30, 2026, to clear pending constructions. Simultaneously, it has rolled out PMAY-U 2.0, expanding the scheme over five years (2024–2029) to assist 1 crore more urban poor and middle-class families with an investment of ₹2.50 lakh crore.

• The scheme operates through four major verticals:

  1. Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) – assistance for construction of houses by eligible beneficiaries.
  2. Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) – affordable houses developed through partnerships involving public/private agencies.
  3. Affordable Rental Housing (ARH) – affordable rental housing for eligible urban residents.
  4. Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS) – interest subsidy on eligible housing loans.The ISS under PMAY-U 2.0 is specifically designed to provide an interest subsidy on eligible home loans. Eligible beneficiaries can receive up to ₹1.80 lakh as government interest subsidy, subject to the scheme's conditions. 
  PMAY-U Eligibility

  Under PMAY-U 2.0, the main eligibility conditions are:

  • The applicant must be an urban resident/household falling within the scheme's eligible categories.
  • The family should not own a pucca house anywhere in India in the name of any family member.
  • The scheme primarily covers Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Low Income Groups (LIG), and Middle Income Groups (MIG), subject to the applicable income limits and component-specific conditions.
  • Beneficiaries must meet the conditions prescribed for the particular component—BLC, AHP, ARH or ISS.
  • Applicants who have already received housing assistance under certain Central/State/UT housing schemes may not be eligible, depending on the applicable PMAY-U 2.0 rules.
  • Income :EWS ≤ ₹3 lakh | LIG ₹3–6 lakh | MIG ₹6–9 lakh ( PMAY-U 2.0)
