  • NITI Aayog Releases Investment Friendliness Index 2026:NITI Aayog released the first Investment Friendliness Index on 17 July 2026 to assess investment-related conditions across India's States and Union Territories.Gujarat ranked first with a score of 56.6, followed by:RankStateScore

The index covers 28 States and 8 Union Territories and assesses factors including infrastructure, business climate, resources, government policy, regulatory environment, financial health and environmental resilience.
  • The government highlighted the Modified UDAN initiative aimed at strengthening India's regional aviation network.The scheme focuses on improving air connectivity to underserved and unserved regions and supporting the expansion of regional airports and routes.   • Indian private space company Skyroot Aerospace prepared for the maiden orbital test flight of its Vikram-1 rocket, scheduled for 18 July 2026.The mission is named Aagaman and represents India's first attempt by a private company to launch an orbital-class rocket from Indian soil.The launch is planned from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
  • Draft CAFE-III Norms for Passenger Vehicles:The Ministry of Power circulated the draft Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE)-III Norms for stakeholder consultation.The proposed standards aim to tighten fuel-efficiency and CO₂ emission requirements for passenger vehicles from 1 April 2027.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered train between Jind and Sonipat at Jind railway station in Haryana. 

International

  • Exercise Pitch Black 2026: India’s Rafale fighter aircraft and C-17 transport aircraft have reached Australia to participate in the Royal Australian Air Force’s premier multinational air combat exercise, Pitch Black 2026. The deployment marks another step in expanding defence cooperation between India and Australia.The High Commission of India in Canberra announced the arrival of the Indian Air Force contingent in a social media post. The contingent comprises four Rafale fighter aircraft, two C-17 transport aircraft and over 120 Air Warriors.

Economy and banking

  • The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released trial monthly indices covering 19 services sub-sectors as part of the development of India's Index of Services Production (ISP).The trial index uses 2024–25 as the base year and is intended to provide a regular measure of India's services-sector output. The covered sub-sectors represent around 60% of the formal services economy.India has long had the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for industrial output, but lacked a comparable monthly headline indicator for the services sector.
  • Government Mandates TReDS for CPSEs in MSME Invoice Settlement.The government moved to strengthen the use of the Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS) for settlement of MSME invoices by Central Public Sector Enterprises.TReDS is an RBI-regulated electronic platform that enables MSMEs to obtain working capital by discounting their trade receivables.

  • West Indies cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers passed away today at the age of 89. One of the finest all-rounders the game has ever seen, Sobers played 93 Tests and scored 8,032 runs at 57.78 with 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries between March 1954 to April 1974.
