1.3 DRI uncovers illegal import of 7,311 tonnes of Pakistan-origin rock salt

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) uncovered a transnational smuggling network allegedly involved in circumventing India's prohibition on imports of goods originating in or exported from Pakistan.

The operation, named Operation Deep Manifest, detected 295 containers carrying 7,311 metric tonnes of industrial or Himalayan rock salt of Pakistani origin.

The consignments had an estimated market value of approximately ₹30 crore. They were routed through Colombo Port in Sri Lanka, with investigators alleging that fabricated certificates of origin and invoices issued by UAE-based entities were used to disguise their origin.

Major findings

  • Nine importers were identified.

  • Four people were arrested under the Customs Act, 1962.

  • Five containers carrying 140 metric tonnes of salt were seized at Kandla Port.

  • Sales proceeds of ₹20.96 lakh held in importers' bank accounts were also seized.

The alleged scheme involved falsified trade documents and third-country routing intended to misrepresent the origin of the goods.

India imposed a prohibition on direct or indirect imports and transit of goods originating in or exported from Pakistan through DGFT Notification No. 06/2025–26 dated 2 May 2025, following the Pahalgam terror attack in April 2025.

Exam Points:

  • Enforcement agency: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence.

  • Operation: Deep Manifest.

  • Goods involved: Pakistan-origin industrial/Himalayan rock salt.

  • Quantity detected: 7,311 metric tonnes.

  • Allocation: ₹33,660 crore.

  • Planned industrial parks: 100.

The approved transaction structure covers a combined 60.72% equity stake, comprising:

  • Government of India: 30.48%.

  • Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC): 30.24%.

7. Days Observed

7.1 World Standards Day – 14 October

World Standards Day is observed annually on 14 October to recognise the contribution of standards-development organisations and experts in creating technical standards that support safety, quality, interoperability and international cooperation.

Theme for 2026

“Shared Vision for a Better World: Spotlight on SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy.”

The theme highlights how standards can support reliable, safe, affordable and sustainable energy systems.

International standards help establish common technical requirements for products and systems, improve compatibility across markets, facilitate trade and support the adoption of new technologies.

In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards used the occasion to announce the Silver Refinery Scheme and new standards connected with clean energy, emerging technologies and sustainable development.

Exam Points:

  • Earphones and headphones.

  • Charging cables and USB adapters.

  • Small electronic gadgets.

  • Mini fans and LED string lights.

  • Small battery-powered devices.

Although these items may appear insignificant, they contain electronic components and materials that require appropriate collection and treatment.

Consumers are encouraged to repair, reuse or return unwanted electronic products to authorised collection points instead of putting them in ordinary waste bins.

International E-Waste Day promotes awareness of the circular economy and the need to recover reusable materials while reducing environmental damage.
