1.2 Government proposes stricter restrictions on prescription-drug advertising
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare proposed amendments to the Drugs Rules, 1945, to extend advertising restrictions on certain prescription medicines to retailers, wholesalers and distributors.
The draft amendment concerns medicines covered under Schedule H, Schedule H1 and Schedule X.
Under the existing framework, pharmaceutical manufacturers face restrictions on advertising these medicines without prior approval from the Central Government. The proposed changes seek to extend the relevant requirements to licensed entities involved in selling and distributing these drugs.
The measure aims to discourage unauthorised promotion of prescription medicines, reduce inappropriate self-medication and strengthen public-health safeguards.
The government invited objections and suggestions from stakeholders and members of the public before finalising the amendment.

The affected companies included Microsoft, Cognizant, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, Wipro, HCL Technologies and Capgemini.
The move forms part of broader scrutiny of employment-based immigration procedures in the United States.
Indian technology companies and industry representatives indicated that the immediate operational impact could be limited because firms have diversified recruitment practices and increased local hiring in the US.
Why is this important for India?
The Indian IT sector has substantial business interests in the US. Changes to employment-based permanent-residency processes can affect skilled Indian professionals, recruitment strategies and long-term workforce planning.
Important distinction: PERM is a permanent-residency labour-certification process. Its suspension should not be confused with the wholesale cancellation of H-1B temporary work visas.
